December 11, 2024Blue marlin fishing in the Canary Islands: an exciting challenge
Few fishing experiences are as spectacular as that of the Blue Marlin, the "king" of the seas, especially in the waters of the Canary Islands, one of the focal points for deep-sea fishing enthusiasts.
This mighty marine predator presents a real challenge to fishermen, both because of its strength and incredible endurance. The best time to trap it is from June to September, when the Blue Marlin populates the waters of Tenerife and La Gomera in search of prey.
The Canary Islands, and particularly La Gomera, offer an ideal environment for Blue Marlin fishing, where specimens reaching extraordinary sizes of up to 500 kg are encountered.
Blue Marlin fishing in the Canary Islands is particularly concentrated in Saint Sebastian de La Gomera, one of the most desirable areas for this type of deep-sea fishing. Here, Blue Marlin channel themselves into the currents, creating an ideal setting for deep-sea fishing. With our boat and the support of an experienced team, each outing is designed to get as close as possible to these impressive fish.
In the waters of the Canary Islands, Blue Marlin reach exceptional sizes. Unlike Cape Verde, where marlin from 70 to 100 kg can be encountered, in the Canaries the fish are often much larger, with specimens reaching weights from 180 to over 500 kg. These giants of the sea require specialized equipment and techniques to handle them during combat.
Combat: a test of strength and endurance
Techniques and equipment
To tackle Blue Marlin, the most commonly used technique is deep-sea trolling, performed at speeds between 7.5 and 9 knots using four rods: two hooks and two dredges. The bait of choice is kona, but the bait-and-switch technique of bait-and-switch, which involves baiting dead fish, is also often used. Our equipment includes Asso Triple Force , with a diameter of 0.90 mm and a breaking strength of 130 pounds. In the terminals, we also use 2.50 mm Asso Leader, a wire designed to withstand the most challenging situations at sea.
Combat: a test of strength and endurance
The real excitement comes when the Blue Marlin bites. In an instant, there is an adrenaline rush: the fish darts and makes spectacular leaps out of the water, creating a show that every angler dreams of experiencing. Fighting a 100- to 200-pound Marlin can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half, while 300- to 500-pound specimens can take up to 3 to 5 hours to bring aboard, especially if the fish tries to escape by diving into the depths. The boat's reverse gear, calibrated movements, the endurance of the equipment, and the tenacity of the fisherman combine to create an unforgettable experience.
The beauty and majesty of the Blue Marlin
In addition to the sporting challenge, Blue Marlin fishing offers moments of pure beauty. Watching a Marlin as it hunts on the surface, ready to launch itself toward the bait, is a thrilling sight. Its leaps out of the water leave you breathless, giving you images that stay with you for a long time. Every time a Blue Marlin takes the bait, there is a unique thrill of respect and admiration for such an extraordinary fish.
To get the most out of this unique experience, it is essential to rely on superior equipment, such as that from Asso Fishing Line, which guarantees reliability and durability even in the most extreme situations. Blue Marlin fishing is a test of skill, patience and passion - a challenge that tests your limits, but gives you unforgettable thrills.

I have been fishing from a very young age, a very strong passion that my grandfather passed on to me from the age of 6 when he took me fishing with him and taught me respect for the sea and all fishing techniques.
I cultivated this passion for years in Sicily and Lazio until it was necessary for me to turn it into a job. Today I run a fishing charter company in Tenerife where I organize fishing trips to Big Giant Tunas, Big Amberjacks and Blue Marlin. I also have charter bases in Italy, in Lazio and Sicily where I practice all types of fishing...live trolling, offshore trolling, drifting, deep sea bolentino and vertical fishing.
